Renting "Space"

It is a generally accepted fact that if you rent space at one of the storage facilities, the rate you are charged is based on what the owner requires to receive on the total number of rental units divided by the number of rental units.  If you come to their facility with a truck and require more space than one unit, you will have to pay extra to rent the second unit.  That's a no-brainer.  The owner isn't going to let you use the second unit for free just because you had more items than one unit could hold after you got there.

Now to the actual point of this.  An airline has a gross amount they have to receive with respect to the number of seats on the airplane.  If they send out a flight with 20% of the seats not filled, they lose money on that flight, with respect to all seats filled.  Every seat has a cost tied to it.  If you are such that you take up more than one seat, you should have to pay for the extra "space" required, just as you would if you were renting a storage unit.  There  seems to be a controversy over this, but as I said before, it should be a no-brainer.  You should pay for any "space" over and above the standard issue.  You don't hear the smaller people complaining that they should get a discount when they eat at a Ryan's Steak House or such, just because they're not able to eat as much as a larger person with the same meal charge.  If you rent a container and either don't put anything in it at all or fill it up, you pay the same fee, but it you need two containers to accommodate all your property, you will have to pay double.  "What's the beef"?
